Getting Started

The Three Lies Keeping You Out of Every Gym in Billings

Adults who want to start training almost never say "I don't want to." They say one of three other things instead. Usually to themselves, usually for years. All three sound reasonable. All three are wrong in the same way.

Let's knock them down in order.

Lie #1: "I need to get in shape first"

This one wins the popularity contest. It's also a perfect loop: you avoid the gym until you're fitter, and you can't get fitter because you're avoiding the gym. People ride that loop from one New Year to the next.

Here's the release valve. A real training studio expects you to arrive exactly as you are. At Alloy in Billings, your first appointment is a Fitness Consultation. That's a conversation, an InBody scan, a movement assessment, and a short sample of coached training scaled to you. The word "scaled" is doing the work there. There is no shape you need to be in first. Measuring the shape you're in is literally the service.

Lie #2: "Everyone will be watching me"

Nobody at a big gym is watching you, which is its own problem, and we'll get to it. But the fear makes sense. A warehouse floor full of strangers and mirrors is a terrible place to feel new.

So don't start on one. Our sessions are capped at six people, and each person is buried in their own program, because everyone's workout is different. The audience you're imagining doesn't exist here. What exists is a coach whose actual job is to watch you, in the useful sense: your form, your weights, your progress. Being watched by someone paid to help you is the good version of the thing you're afraid of.

Lie #3: "I'll figure it out on my own"

Some people do. Most don't, and the big-box business model depends on that. A membership card plus a sea of machines minus any instruction equals the quietest money in the fitness industry. The gym gets paid the same whether you show up confused or not at all.

Beginners fail on their own for boring, fixable reasons. No plan, so every visit starts with wandering. No feedback, so form problems calcify into injuries. No progression, so month four looks identical to month one. A coach removes all three failure points in exchange for showing up. That's the entire trade, and for a beginner it's the best deal in fitness.

What does a beginner's actual start look like here?

Unheroic, by design. After your Fitness Consultation, you begin two or three coached 55-minute sessions a week. The first weeks use weights that feel suspiciously manageable, because they're calibrated to build the habit and the movement patterns before the load.

Progress gets measured instead of guessed at. Follow-up InBody scans track your muscle and body fat, and monthly accountability sessions put you and a coach in front of your numbers. Somewhere around week six, stairs and grocery runs start feeling different, and the whole thing stops requiring faith.

Frequently asked questions

How unfit is too unfit to start? We've never met that person. Programs scale to wherever you are, including "starting from the couch."

I'm in my 50s and have never lifted a weight. Really, me? Really. Adults over 40 are who this studio was built for, and never-lifted beginners walk in every month. You'd be joining your people, not intruding on someone else's.

What should I bring on day one? Sneakers, comfortable clothes, water if you want it. Every piece of equipment you'll touch is here already.

What hours can I come? Monday through Thursday 5:00–11:00 AM and 4:00–7:00 PM, Friday 5:00 AM–11:00 PM, and Saturday 7:00–10:00 AM. The 5 AM slots are quietly popular with people who like the day done early.
